Single Channel HD Video, 5:00 Min.The Wild Garden takes its name from a horticultural book from the 1800’s. Advocating for more naturalistic plantings in garden settings, the author, William Robinson notes “how much more enjoyable such places would be, as at almost every step there would be something fresh to attract notice and gratify the eye” if instead of traditional English garden shrubs, one used bold plants such as Japanese Knotweed. In the video, a woman on a stroll is enraptured by the hyperbolic outcome of such designs—both terrifying and beautiful.*

Installation shot from the group show ‘Fragile Rainbow: Traversing Habitats’ at the WAH (Williamsburg Art and Historical) Gallery, May 2022.
* Today, Knotweed is one of the most hated non-native plants in the U.S. and Europe for the damage it can cause to an ecosystem crowding out other plants and establishing itself in patches up to the size of a football field like this one in Maine. And yet it offers potential benefits as well—see the project Nectar distributed through FRUIT&ROT.

indivisible

indigo, repurposed silk, thread, aluminum tube

Flags are a form of governance under which its residents are granted legal protections and rights. The indigo-dyed flags (and matching parachute) envision a world beyond nation-states and human exceptionalism, in which we express loyalty to our atmosphere—an element indivisible from life on Earth.
Altered Pledge of Allegiance (paper, thread).

the sky’s the limit!
exhaled breath, burst balloons, sunlight, cyanotype emulsion, encaustic wax, paper, fabric
These cyanotypes made with translucent balloons and encased in wax appear ghostly, atmospheric, and cloud-like. But the burst balloons no longer hold the breath that inflated them. Like rising carbon dioxide levels in the Earth’s atmosphere, they have exceeded their limits.

inhale, exhale
exhaled breath, balloons, plaster, silicone
Plaster sculptures that fill a void made with breath. While the action is about the breath—our not-so-personal atmosphere—the objects recall the body.
Daily ritual for several weeks.

Our olfactory sense triggers memories—and by association, one might say that smell is linked to time in human perception. This experimental research is a sensory teaching tool to talk about the delicate complexity of our forests in a warming climate. It employs ethnobotanical processes, such as distillation, tinctures, and smoke, to create scent combinations that map forest succession in Prospect Park, Brooklyn—from pre-European settlement to future scenarios. Forests pre-logging smelled different from today's forests, and that smell is ever-changing as forest succession and climate change march on.
Outcomes also include a video essay, botanical drawings, process documentation, and microscopic footage. This project was developed in conversation with faculty at the University of Michigan Biological Station. Funding provided by a Pratt Institute Research Seed Grant and presented as part of the Pratt Institute Research Open House.

Dimensions variable. This installation reflects the radical possibility for sentient conversation with the non-human if only to connect us to our own visceral wilderness. Video, textile installations, shibori flags, and flamework glass vessels filled with lichen dye call to mind the atmosphere and paradoxically the human body.
The risograph-printed catalog for the exhibit includes an introductory essay by Julia Schwadron, director MFA-IA SNU. Design and writing by Jean Brennan.

Performing vowels in the note of blue is a score for nondiscursive communication with(in) a grove of red pines somewhere in the Catskills. Planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this stand possesses the uncanny quality of a single species plantation gone wild.
Five women (a,e,i,o,u) perform the vowels through the use of semaphore flags—a signaling system that augments the body to communicate across distances of land and sea. The movements—like language, like the forest—slip between structure and improvisation. Together, we consider how meaning is constructed in human and nonhuman worlds and imagine a space for communication between.
Risograph-printed broadsheet acts as a choreographic score and was provided as a takeaway for viewers during the exhibits. Conceived and directed by Jean Brennan. Performed by Felicia Ballos, Jean Brennan, Elizabeth Castagna, Alexa Beckham, and Amanda Punsoda. Cinematography by Rob Featherstone. Clothing by Colorant.
Installation at BAU Gallery in Beacon NY.

Dimensions variableThis installation considers the ecology of communication in plants and people, and the medium that bears this transmission: wind. Silk scrims dyed with sagebrush, wolf lichen and lodgepole pine bark, harvested on site, set the stage for a reading, in the round, of the poem Suleika I written by Goethe's lover, Marianne von Willemer.

The overlapping multiphonic voices were mirrored by the tonal variations of color in the silk. Audience members exited to a recording of King Crimson's I Talk to the Wind, 1969. Inspired by ecologist Richard Karban’s research on airborne communication in sagebrush plants, leading to resiliency in the species: Damage-Induced Resistance in Sagebrush: Volatiles are Key To Intra- and Interplant Communication by Richard Karban, Kaori Shiojiri, Mikaela Huntzinger, and Andrew C. McCall

Risograph-printed broadsheet integrates Karban’s research with Willemer’s love poem that addresses the wind. It also served as a score for the live performance. Audience members, along with incognito performers, were guided along a path, and onto a foot bridge where they discovered stacks of the broadsheets. See more about the broadsheet on Fruit & Rot. One of several projects that employs natural dye and extraction as a way of engaging with plant species and place making.

This piece is a poetic response to the wind, as filmed during a snowstorm on Lake Tahoe. Inspired by the writings of Martin Heidegger, Tim Morton, and Joseph Grange, it explores the origin of certain words and what they reveal about the entangled relationship between our bodies and our environment. It asks: how does living in a time of climate uncertainty affect your perception of self—of finding place?

Rips, caused by the wind, in the mylar structures were marked with red metallic tape and accompany the video install.

Lyrical essay + field guide, edition of 50, 5x7”This research includes a social and ecological field guide, documentation of a durational action, and a set of assembled tools. The action, a walk, traced the perimeter of an aerial bomb training site, located in an ecologically rare dwarf pine plain, during the season’s first snow. A small video camera strapped to the back of my head captured a receding landscape and the mark-making action in video. The field guide includes an essay, project documentation, and images that register how areas of the Pinelands have been deemed ’sacrificial zones’ (Naomi Klein) despite their ecological significance. The project began with an excavation of personal and family memories related to the New Jersey Pine Barrens.Tools: Pine, willow, cranberry dye, cochineal, pine tar, leather strap, found iron tine cultivator

Over 300 stones covered in blue chalk were disseminated throughout this prison cemetery and beyond, to create an ephemeral wayfinding system of an overlooked segment of our community. The blue chunks, like atmospheric portals in the landscape, marked the participants’ hands with their deed. Together, we read the names of those buried in the unmarked graves. This piece weighs our complicity in the current penal system and how to respond as neighbors occupying common territory.Prison Cemetery, Beacon, NY
